MISSISSAUGA, Ontario, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- Hazel McCallion is 89 years old, has been mayor of Mississauga, Ontario, for 32 years and says she's not done yet.
McCallion filed her nomination papers for a 12th term Wednesday, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported. The municipal election will be Oct. 25.
She was first elected mayor of Canada's sixth-largest city -- 729,000 people -- in 1978. Before that, she was mayor of Streetsville, which was absorbed into Mississauga.
"Well I'm quite excited," she said at an afternoon news conference. "At two o'clock today I registered to run. It was a matter of formality because for many months I've been saying to the people of Mississauga that I was going to offer myself to them for another four years."
She will be in a crowded field, the CBC noted, with 13 people registered to run in the race with the nomination period still open until Friday.
Overshadowing this campaign is an inquiry into the involvement of McCallion and her son Peter in a $14.4 million land deal. The results of the probe won't be known before the election.
