NEW YORK, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- Boulder, Colo., tops the list of America's brainiest cities, followed by Durham-Chapel Hill, N.C., Washington, Boston and Trenton, N.J., an analysis found.

The news Web site, the Daily Beast, crunched numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the U.S. Census Bureau to create the list of Brainiest Cities based on three factors -- the percentage of adults age 25 and older with a doctorate., master's or professional degree; computer scientists and mathematicians as a percentage of all employment; and scientists -- physical, biological and social -- as a percentage of employment.

Rounding out the list of brainiest cities are: San Jose, Calif., San Francisco, Austin, Texas, Seattle, Ithaca, N.Y., Charlottesville, Va., Madison, Wis., Corvallis, Ore., Fort Collins, Colo., Ames, Iowa, Albany-Schenectady, N.Y., and Rochester, Minn.

The brainiest cities tend to have higher incomes, wages, and economic output, as well as higher levels of innovation measured as patents; more high-tech industry and higher housing prices, the analysis by a research team at the Martin Prosperity Institute found.
